Missed Call Alert Service: How It Works in India and Its Limits

When your phone is switched off or out of coverage, the network can keep a list of who tried to call and send it to you by SMS when you are back. That is the missed call alert service. It is useful for a personal number. For a business number it tells you who called but not why, and by the time you see it the caller has often rung someone else.

What the service does

When a call cannot reach your phone because it is off or has no signal, the network answers it instead of leaving the caller with a busy tone. When your phone reconnects, you get an SMS listing the numbers and times of those calls. Some operators also send the caller an SMS saying you are now reachable. It only covers calls that could not reach the phone; if the phone rang and you did not pick up, it appears in your call log as a normal missed call.

Turning it on

On most prepaid and postpaid plans it is on by default. If it is not, the operator's app usually has it under call or value-added services, and customer care can switch it on. It depends on the unreachable forwarding setting pointing to the operator's own alert number, so if you have ever set *62* forwarding to another number, the alerts stop. What it cannot tell you

• Why they called. You get a number, not a reason. A patient with tooth pain and a salesman look the same.
• Who they are. Unless the number is saved, you do not know the name.
• Anything while the phone is on. A busy counter where nobody answers does not count as unreachable, so those calls do not generate alerts.

What a business needs instead

A business owner calling back a list of numbers spends the evening asking "you called?" to people who have already booked elsewhere. What helps is the reason, the name and a callback number, captured while the caller is still on the line.
