What you need

• A smartphone to run the WhatsApp Business app (it can be a spare phone at the counter).
• The landline or business number, and a way to hear a call on it during setup.
• A number not already registered on WhatsApp, or you first remove it from the other account.

Setting it up

1. Install WhatsApp Business on the phone and start registration.
2. Enter the landline number with its STD code, in international form (+91, then the area code without the leading zero, then the number).
3. When WhatsApp tries to send an SMS, wait for the timer to end, then choose Call me.
4. Answer the call on the landline and note the six-digit code read out.
5. Type the code into the app. The business profile, hours and catalogue can then be filled in.

If the landline has call forwarding or an IVR in front of it, switch those off for the few minutes of verification so the automated call reaches a person.

Virtual numbers

A virtual business number that can receive calls works the same way, as long as you can hear the verification call. Some providers forward calls to a mobile; answer it there. Numbers that can only take messages through an app, or that are shared across many businesses, often fail verification or get flagged, so use a number that is yours alone.
